SPIDA Calc Software
Brett Willitt - Manager Business Development, SPIDA Software
George Kopanski - Distribution Designer, Asset Management & Engineering, Thunder Bay Hydro
Program Description
The current edition of CSA C22.3 No.1,
Overhead Systems, emphasizes non-linear
analysis as the preferred pole analysis
method. This session will demystify nonlinear
analysis, demonstrate how new
technology simplifies non-linear analysis
of complex distribution systems, and
practical benefits of using specialized
software. Participants should expect a
fast-paced discussion that uses Thunder
Bay’s real-life examples to frame the
presentation.
TRACK B # 1 (Operations) Smart Meter Reverification Guidelines
Paul Rivers - Ontario Electrical Specialist, Measurement Canada
Mark Bax, C. Tech. – Manager Measurement & Calibration Services
Program Description
Seal extension of electronic sampling
allows you to draw a small amount
of meters from the field (usually
10% or less), and statistically analyze
the results to show meter accuracy,
integrity & dependability. The test
results can then allow the remaining
90% of the meters to remain in the
field for extended years without
testing 100%. This gives a massive cost
savings, and keeps meter integrity at a
maximum.
TRACK C # 1 (Information Systems)
Mobile Devices….What’s your Plan?
Timm Duvall - PC/Network Support Specialist, Peterborough Utilities Group
Nick Powers - IT Security Manager, Peterborough Utilities Group
Program Description
Staff are increasingly requesting access to
mobile devices, such as tablets and smart
phones, in the workplace. This includes
employee and employer owned devices.
How do you find the middle ground between
ensuring corporate security and meeting the
business needs of your organization? During
this presentation Peterborough shares their
approach and the lessons learned along the
way.

Smart Design Helps Utilities Face Workforce Challenges
Geoff Zeiss - Director Industry Utility Program, Auto Desk
Gaye-Donna Young, P.Eng. - COO Newmarket Hydro
Program Description
Utilities in the World’s advanced
economies are facing serious challenges,
aging infrastructure, distributed
renewable energy sources, and smart
grid are changing how we design and
operate distribution networks. At the
same time utilities are facing workforce
challenges. We will show how utilities are
incorporating smart model-based design
processes and technology to improve
design productivity, standardization, and
quality. The session will also describe
how utilities can use the rich "situational
awareness" information available today to
enhance project planning.
TRACK B # 2 (Operations)
Hydro Ottawa’s "Worst Feeder" Evaluation Methodology
Jenna Van Vliet - Distribution Engineer (EIT), Hydro Ottawa Ltd.
Program Description
Through the use of standard reliability
indices, SAIFI, SAIDI, FEMI and MAIFI,
the reliability performance of feeders
can be tracked. With these indices, a
ranked listing of the feeders with the
poorest reliability performance can be
developed and trended annually. The
basis for the evaluation of the “Worst
Feeders” is to track and highlight
priority areas that are consistently
seeing issues, to then identify solutions
to improve the reliability performance.
TRACK C # 2 (Information Systems)
Reliable Risk Assessment
Joseph Heraldo - COO Springboard Management
Bill Shewan – Manager of Health and Safety and Environment, Oakville Hydro Corporation
Program Description
Risk assessment is a proactive and mitigative
process, making it difficult to measure its
strength and significance to the health
of your organization. By incorporating
employee awareness into the process,
however, and the ability to demonstrate
their knowledge and understanding of
corporate risk assessment, you can increase
the reliability of your results. Learn how
one organization’s focus on employee
engagement has exposed the true value of
risk assessment.
2:15 PM – 2:20 PM BREAK BETWEEN SESSIONS
2:20 PM – 3:05 PM CONCURRENT # 3
TRACK A # 3 (Engineering) Risk - Centric Asset Management Infrastructure
Heather Wyatt - Manager Regulatory Compliance and Governance, Brantford Power
Program Description
To provide context and supporting
rationale for future Ontario Energy Board
rate filings and to efficiently manage
infrastructure in a sustainable manner,
Brantford Power Inc. recognized the
importance of comprehensive Asset
Management planning. Urban and
Environmental Management Inc. was
retained by Brantford Power Inc. to
establish an Asset Management Program
that will support the annual capital
budgeting process in a manner consistent
with the business processes of the utility
and the City of Brantford. The Model
utilizes the concept of risk in order to
predict the future performance of assets
such as transformers, switches, poles, and
cables. A matrix model ranks asset risks
according to the probability of failure and
the potential consequences of failure.
TRACK B # 3 (Operations)
Safety and the Smart Grid
Mike Doherty - Health and Safety Consultant, Training and Evaluation Infrastructure H&S Association (IHSA)
Program Description
Define how the "Smart Grid" needs
to interact with Health & Safety
legislation and safe work planning in
the workplace. Discuss the business
case for using recognized Health
& Safety Managed Systems and
consensus standards within the "smart
Grid" designs.
TRACK C # 3 (Information Systems) Smart Meters: Understanding Operational Data Stores (ODS)
Ms. Nancy Taylor - Vice President, Utilities Kingston & Kingston Hydro Corp.
Mr. Kevin McCauley - P. Eng, Project Manager, Utilities Engineering, Utilities Kingston
Marianne Blasman - Vice President, Information Technology Services, Waterloo North Hydro Inc.
Program Description
As LDC’s have begun to understand the value
of an Operational Data Store (ODS),
many utilities are moving to implement this
essential core component of their smart
metering systems. Utilities Kingston and
Waterloo North Hydro will jointly provide an
update on their implementation of JOMAR
Softcorp International’s ODS Software
solution including a discussion of the scope
of an ODS as well as the benefits,
challenges and future growth of the ODS to
the LDC. The presentation will encompass
